Specificity

Concrete language makes consequences easier to predict.

01 / UNDERSTAND

The idea

Specific wording tells people what an action does, what information is needed and what outcome to expect. Replace vague labels with language that matches the task. The detail should be accurate and useful.

Specific actions and questions can feel more purposeful and make results easier to predict. A concrete payment label, delivery destination or error explanation can answer questions before a person commits. Use precise information that genuinely exists; extra detail is unhelpful when it is inaccurate or exposes information unnecessarily.

02 / RECOGNISE

See it in real products.

Examples of how the principle can appear in an interface.

EtsyEXAMPLE 01

Confirm the destination in the action

Etsy includes delivery context in the final purchasing step. The detail helps a buyer verify where the order will go before committing.

InstagramEXAMPLE 02

Change the action label when its meaning changes

Instagram changes a send action when multiple recipients are selected. The updated wording distinguishes separate messages from creating a group.

03 / CONNECT

Why it matters.

Concrete labels can reduce uncertainty and help people give more accurate answers. The detail should describe a real action or consequence rather than create false confidence.

Possible influences to investigate, rather than guaranteed outcomes for every product.

04 / APPLY

Put it into practice.

  1. 01

    Name the action and object

  2. 02

    State important consequences

  3. 03

    Use examples for unfamiliar requirements
