Experience Creep

Small additions can accumulate into a complicated experience.

01 / UNDERSTAND

The idea

Each new feature can introduce more navigation, settings, permissions and learning. Review the combined workflow rather than judging every addition in isolation. Complexity is a product management concern, not a fixed exponential law.

Every added feature can also add states, permissions, navigation and onboarding. A simple initial product can gradually become difficult to understand even when each addition seems reasonable in isolation. Review the complete experience and its different audiences. Complexity does not necessarily grow at a fixed mathematical rate.

02 / RECOGNISE

See it in real products.

Examples of how the principle can appear in an interface.

WeBullEXAMPLE 01

Provide a focused mode for a particular audience

WeBull’s Lite mode removes advanced chart and market information from the main view. It preserves a less demanding option for people who do not need the full interface.

StuffEXAMPLE 02

Keep advanced capabilities available without front-loading them

Stuff places additional onboarding tasks in a collapsible advanced section. The growing feature set stays discoverable without receiving equal initial emphasis.

03 / CONNECT

Why it matters.

Accumulated features can make common work less efficient and the overall product harder to understand. Different roles may need different levels of visible complexity.

Possible influences to investigate, rather than guaranteed outcomes for every product.

04 / APPLY

Put it into practice.

  1. 01

    Review cumulative complexity

  2. 02

Measure usage by role and task

  3. 03

Retire or simplify features with evidence
